What a friend we have in Jesus.

Let God take of your worries and concerns

A God that loves us.

What a Friend We Have in Jesus

We all know the beautiful old hymn, but have we truly grasped what it means? Do we know Jesus as more than just our Saviour—the One we pray to when we need help? Do we know Him as a friend?

I know Jesus, but have I let Him be my best friend? If I'm honest, I've often held back. Maybe it's because of past teachings, my stubbornness, or simply not understanding how close He wants to be to me. But the truth is, Jesus isn't distant—He's waiting, always ready to be the friend we need.

The song goes on to say

“What a friend we have in Jesus.  All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer!

Oh what peace we often forfeit,  Oh what needless pain we bear,  All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer

Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?  We should never be discouraged

Take it to the Lord in prayer

Can we find a friend so faithful.  Who will all our sorrows share?  Jesus knows our every weakness

Take it to the Lord in prayer

Poem by Joseph M Scriven

The song reminds us:

"What a privilege to carry

Everything to God in prayer!   Oh, what peace we often forfeit,   Oh, what needless pain we bear,  All because we do not carry, Everything to God in prayer."

These words jump off the page. How much peace have we missed out on because we tried to carry our burdens alone? How often have we struggled when Jesus said, "Friend, I am here. Let me help you?"

What Does It Mean to Have a Friend?

A true friend brings affection, loyalty, love, respect, and trust. Friendship means knowing someone deeply, feeling safe to share anything, and having someone who stands by you in all circumstances.

But Jesus takes friendship even further:

"I've told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your and wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you.

I'm no longer calling you servants… No, I've named you friends because I've let you in on everything I've heard from the Father."

– John 15:11-15 (MSG)

Wow! Jesus calls us His friends. He gave His life for us, not just so we could be saved, but so we could walk in closeness with Him. He doesn't hold back. He wants to share everything the Father has told Him—if we only listen.

A Friend Who Never Leaves

Think about it—what would life be like if Jesus hadn't died for us, risen again, and gone to the Father? It's overwhelming to imagine. Yet, even now, He walks beside us, offering love, guidance, and strength.

So today, I choose to lean into this friendship, talk to Him more, listen, and bring everything to Him in prayer because Jesus is not just my Saviour—He is my greatest, most genuine, and most faithful Friend.

And He is yours, too.
