Jesus Is My Source
Trusting God With the Future While Taking the Next Step in Faith
The future is not in my hands.
The future is in the hands of my Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Because of that truth, I can face tomorrow with confidence. I am not walking through life alone. I belong to Him.
Scripture reminds us of our identity as believers:
“But to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”
John 1:12
If we belong to Christ, then we are part of God’s family. We are sons and daughters of the King.
That means our lives are not random or without purpose. God has chosen us, placed us where we are, and given us work to do.
Our confidence about the future does not come from knowing exactly what will happen. It comes from knowing Who holds our future.
God Has a Purpose for Your Life
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Ephesians 2:10
There is a calling on every believer’s life.
That calling may be expressed through ministry, family, business, work, service, generosity or leadership. We do not all have the same assignment, but none of us is without purpose.
When God places an opportunity, responsibility or calling before us, opposition will often appear.
Sometimes that opposition comes through circumstances, difficulties or resistance from others. But often the strongest opposition comes from within:
Fear. Doubt. Uncertainty.
At those moments we need to remember that God’s calling is greater than our fear. If He calls us forward, we can trust Him to provide what we need for the journey.
Faith Does Not Mean Doing Nothing
One of the misunderstandings Christians can fall into is believing that trusting God means simply waiting for Him to do everything.
We pray. We wait. We hope.
But sometimes God is waiting for us to move.
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus frequently asked people to take an action before they saw the outcome.
- At the wedding at Cana, the servants filled the jars with water before the water became wine.
- When feeding the five thousand, the disciples brought the available loaves and fish before Jesus multiplied them.
- When healing the man born blind, Jesus told him to go and wash before he received his sight.
The miracle belonged to God, but there was still something for people to do.
We do what is possible and trust God with what is impossible.
“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”
Proverbs 16:3
Prayer and action are not opposites. We pray because we depend upon God. We work because God has given us responsibilities, abilities and opportunities.
Faith moves forward.
God Usually Shows Us the Next Step
Another obstacle we face is the fear of the unknown.
We would often prefer God to reveal the complete plan. Where are we going? How will this work? What will happen next year? How will everything turn out?
But God rarely gives us the entire map.
Instead, He gives us enough direction to take the next step.
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
Psalm 119:105
A lamp does not illuminate the entire road ahead. It provides enough light to see where to place your foot next.
That is often how God leads us:
One decision. One opportunity. One act of obedience. One step at a time.
We may want certainty about the destination. God asks us to trust the One who is leading us.
From Fear to Faith
| Fear Says | Faith Remembers | Our Response |
|---|---|---|
| I don't know what the future holds. | Jesus already holds my future. | Trust Him with tomorrow. |
| I don't know what to do. | God's Word gives light for the next step. | Take the next faithful step. |
| I might fail. | Christ is my strength. | Act faithfully rather than fearfully. |
| I don't have enough. | God is my source. | Use faithfully what He has provided. |
| The task is too difficult. | What is impossible for me is not impossible for God. | Do what you can and trust God with the rest. |
| I need the whole plan first. | God often leads one step at a time. | Obey what He has shown you today. |
What About the Fear of Failure?
Failure can become one of the greatest barriers to moving forward.
What if I make the wrong decision? What if the business does not succeed? What if the opportunity disappears? What if I misunderstood? What if I simply fail?
These are reasonable human concerns. But our confidence was never meant to rest entirely on our own ability.
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Philippians 4:13
This does not mean that everything we attempt will produce exactly the result we want. It means that Christ is our strength in whatever circumstances we face.
Sometimes God may bless the plan. Sometimes He may change the plan. Sometimes He may close one door and redirect us towards another.
Our responsibility is faithfulness. The outcome belongs to Him.
Jesus Is the Source — Not the Circumstances
It is easy to begin looking at circumstances as the source of our security.
A job. A customer. A contract. A bank balance. A business opportunity. Another person.
These things may be channels through which provision comes, but they are not ultimately our source.
Jesus is our source.
When one door closes, God is not suddenly without another way forward.
When circumstances change, God’s ability has not changed.
When people disappoint us, Christ remains faithful.
When we cannot see what comes next, He already knows.
Our confidence therefore does not have to rise and fall according to circumstances.
Our confidence rests in Christ.
Living in Partnership With God
Living in partnership with God does not mean expecting Him to do our work for us.
Neither does it mean trying to accomplish everything in our own strength.
It means bringing the two together:
Prayer and work.
Faith and action.
Trust and obedience.
We ask God for wisdom and then make the best decision we can.
We ask Him to open doors and then have the courage to walk through them.
We ask Him to provide and then faithfully use what He has already placed in our hands.
We ask Him to guide our future while being faithful with today's responsibilities.
This is not passive faith.
It is active dependence upon God.
The Future Is in His Hands
Perhaps you cannot see how everything will work out.
You may be facing uncertainty in your work, finances, family, business or future. You may know what you believe God has called you to do but still wonder how it can possibly happen.
You do not need to know every step.
You need to know the One who walks with you.
Do what God has placed before you today.
Pray. Work. Listen. Obey. Take the next step.
Then trust Him with what you cannot control.
Jesus is my source.
My future is not controlled by circumstances.
My future is held by my Saviour.
And if He has called me forward, I can trust Him to lead me.
Take the Next Step With God
Whatever lies ahead, you do not have to face it in your own strength.
Bring your plans, work, fears and uncertainties before God. Ask Him for wisdom. Listen for His direction. Then faithfully take the next step He places before you.
You may not see the entire road ahead, but you can trust the One who does.
Jesus is your source. Commit your work to Him, trust Him with the outcome, and keep moving forward in faith.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to say Jesus is my source?
It means recognising that our ultimate security, strength, direction and provision come from Christ rather than circumstances, possessions or other people. God may use many different channels to provide for us, but our trust remains in Him.
Does trusting God mean I should simply wait for Him to act?
Not necessarily. Scripture repeatedly combines faith with obedience and action. We should pray for God's guidance while also faithfully doing the work and taking the steps He has placed before us.
How can I overcome fear about the future?
Rather than trying to solve your entire future at once, concentrate on faithfully taking the next step. Psalm 119:105 describes God's Word as a lamp for our feet. God often provides sufficient direction for today's step rather than revealing the entire journey.
What if I take a step of faith and fail?
Failure does not place you beyond God's direction. Our responsibility is to act prayerfully and faithfully. God can teach us, redirect us and use even disappointing circumstances as part of His work in our lives.
How do prayer and hard work fit together?
They belong together. Prayer acknowledges our dependence upon God, while work recognises the responsibilities and abilities He has given us. We do what we can faithfully and entrust to God what only He can do.
